Friday 1/19/2007 Morning Presentation-The Amazing Diveristy of Fall Creek Falls State Park

Bryan January 19th, 2007

Stuart Carroll, Tennessee State Park Ranger at Fall Creek Falls State Park, shared information about the park and Cumberland Plateau with us.  Interestingly, Great Smoky Mountains National Park was acquired by the states of Tennessee and North Carolina and gifted to the U.S. Government.  Fall Creek Falls State Park was acquired by the U.S. Government, developed by the WPA and the CCC, and gifted to the state of Tennessee.

"What is life? It is the flash of a firefly in the night. It is the
breath of a buffalo in the wintertime. It is the little shadow which
runs across the grass and loses itself in the sunset."  -
Isapo-Muxika, chief of the Blackfoot Nation of Canada.

"To keep every cog and wheel is the first precaution of intelligent tinkering"-Aldo Leopold

As Stuart explained the many unique threatened or endangered species within the park, he reminded us of the importance of preserving it and the adjoining property.  As we will all soon be discovering, our state parks were made much too small.  Our favorite overlooks and view sheds (that we have all along thought to be park property) are under threat of development.  I would encourage each of you to get involved with your favorite state park’s friends organization to find our more about how developers are encroaching on our state parks.

Development is endangering not only our views, but the wildlife as well.  The city of Spencer was preparing to dump treated sewage into a drainage that ended up in a nearby cave containing the endangered Indiana Bat.  Thankfully, the city did not move forward and the cave is not protected forever as part of the state park system.
